Two Construction Workers Die in Septic Tank Gas Incident in Barguna

Two construction workers died Wednesday morning after being overcome by toxic gas while working at a newly built house in the Amtali Upazila of Barguna district.

The victims, identified as 35-year-old Zahidul Hawladar and 50-year-old Zafar Hawladar, were attempting to remove centering equipment from a septic tank at a residential building near the Amtali AK School when the accident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses and local fire service officials, the tragedy unfolded when Zahidul descended into the tank at approximately 8:30 a.m. Shortly after entering, he began shouting for help. Zafar attempted to rescue his colleague by entering the tank but quickly lost consciousness as well.

Fire service personnel arrived at the site and initiated a complex rescue operation, which lasted nearly two hours. To reach the men, responders had to clear the accumulated toxic gas and breach the tank’s structure. Despite these efforts, both workers were unresponsive by the time they were recovered. They were rushed to the Amtali Upazila Health Complex, where medical staff declared them dead on arrival.

Medical officer Luna Binte Haq confirmed that both men had succumbed to the effects of the toxic environment inside the tank before reaching the hospital.

The owner of the building, identified as Md. Yusuf Ali, reportedly vacated the area following the incident. Family members of the deceased have expressed anger, blaming the owner for a lack of safety oversight. Relatives of Zafar Hawladar stated that they intend to pursue legal action against the property owner.

Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Sahadat Md. Hasnain confirmed that the bodies have been transported to Barguna General Hospital for post-mortem examinations. While a case of unnatural death has been filed, police stated that further legal measures will be initiated once a formal complaint is received.
