The police have arrested four persons in connection with the beating of a youth on the charge of theft in Rangunia Upazila of Chittagong. They were arrested from Pomra area of Rangunia on Tuesday. They were handed over to the court on Wednesday.
Before this, the incident of beating the young man took place last Monday. He was beaten with a rope in front of Malirhat Belalpara Jame Masjid in Ward No. 3 of Pomra Union in Rangunia. The police said that the youth was severely beaten with a stick. Apart from this, his nails were also removed with pliers.
According to local residents, the young man is the muezzin of a mosque. He went to Pomra area of Rangunia in search of employment in another mosque. There he was beaten for stealing the mosque’s microphone and battery.
When a video of the beating went viral on social media, many criticized it. In this incident, the victim’s sister filed a case at Rangunia Model Police Station as a plaintiff. After that, police raided and arrested four people. They are – Md. Zahir Ahmed (48), Md. Osman (33) and Md. Jasim (37), Md. Abbas Uddin (43).
In a video circulating on social media, the young man was tied to the door of a building with a rope. Around 50 to 60 local people are standing around him. At that time, two to three people were beating him severely with wooden sticks and sticks.
In the video, some people present said to the young man, ‘You stole the battery?’ The young man replied, ‘I didn’t.’
At the end of the video, a person can be seen saying in Chittagong language, “The thief came to steal batteries and machines from the mosque and was caught.” Share this video and spread the word. And if you see a thief in your area, beat him up.
Chittagong Additional District Superintendent of Police Md. Russell told Prothom Alo that the police have arrested four people on the charge of creating a mob and torturing a person on the charge of theft. In the initial interrogation, they admitted their involvement in the incident. An operation is underway to arrest the others involved in the incident.
