A Sylhet special tribunal has concluded the hearing of closing arguments in the high-profile gang rape case at MC College, scheduling the verdict for July 14. Judge Swapon Kumar Sarker of the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal set the date on Wednesday following final submissions from both the prosecution and the defense.

The judicial proceedings for the 2020 case were transferred from the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal to the Speedy Trial Tribunal in May of last year. Throughout the trial, the court heard testimonies from 24 witnesses, including the victim, her husband, the investigating officer, forensic physicians from Osmani Medical College Hospital, and college faculty members.

The case stems from a brutal incident on the night of September 25, 2020, when a young woman was held captive alongside her husband at the MC College dormitory and subjected to a group assault. The victim’s husband subsequently filed a case with the Shah Paran Police Station, naming six individuals and identifying two others as accomplices.

Authorities conducted a swift investigation, apprehending all eight suspects within three days of the incident. Each suspect later provided a judicial confession regarding their involvement. According to forensic reports presented during the investigation, DNA testing established a definitive link between six of the accused and the evidence collected from the crime scene.
