According to the calendar, different types of Baisakhi mangoes including Gopalbhog, Govindbhog, Bombay, Golapkhas can be collected and marketed from May 5. Himsagar Mango, a popular fragrant variety, will hit the market on May 15. One more month to wait for langra mango. This variety of mangoes will be planted from May 27. And at the beginning of June, amrapali will be collected from June 5.

This schedule was announced at a discussion meeting titled ‘Safe Mango Marketing’ in the conference room of the District Commissioner at 4:30 pm today. In the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Afroza Akhtar said that no exemption will be given in the case of collecting, storing or marketing mangoes before the scheduled time. There will be strict vigilance in this regard with the help of law enforcement and agriculture department.
It was informed in the meeting that the target of export of 100 tons of mangoes from Satkhira has been set for the current season. To ensure exportable quality, mango quality will be maintained and mango harvesting will be stopped prematurely. For this purpose, mobile courts, check posts and special monitoring teams will work at the field level. Besides, campaign activities will be conducted to make farmers and traders aware.

According to the sources of the district agriculture department, each mango variety has a certain period of maturity. If the mangoes are ripened earlier, the taste and quality will decrease, which will become a major obstacle in exporting to the international market. Since 2015, Satkhira mangoes have been regularly exported to various countries including Europe, which has opened new opportunities for the local economy.
Saiful Islam, deputy director of the district agriculture extension department, said that in the current season, around 12,300 farmers have cultivated mangoes in 5,350 gardens on 4,140 hectares of land in the district. This year the production target is 70 thousand metric tons. He said, due to the soil and climate of Satkhira, the mango here has a unique taste and aroma. Compared to other parts of the country, mango buds here earlier and the fruit ripens faster.
Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department Saiful Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Bishnupad Pal, Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Monirul Islam, Amchashi Mokhleshur Rahman, Kabir Hossain and others were present in the exchange meeting. Agricultural officers of all upazilas of the district participated virtually in the event.
