Rural Schools Dominate National Primary Football Championship Finals

Young footballers from Mymensingh’s Trishal upazila are poised for a landmark achievement as they head to the capital for the final of the country’s largest primary school football tournament. The Darirampur Model Government Primary School team, having navigated grueling competition from the upazila to the district levels, will compete at the Dhaka Army Stadium on June 20. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the final match, which will determine the top primary school football teams in the nation.
The tournament has highlighted a surge in grassroots athletic talent, with all four finalists—across both boys’ and girls’ categories—hailing from outside the capital. In the girls’ division, Achargaon Government Primary School from Mymensingh’s Nandail will face off against Jorgacha United Government Primary School from Pabna’s Sathia. On the boys’ side, Darirampur Model Government Primary School will challenge Darial Mia Government Primary School from Barishal’s Bakerganj for the championship title.
According to the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE), this competition stands as the largest sporting event in the country’s academic calendar. Launched on April 6, the tournament spanned union, municipality, upazila, district, and divisional levels, drawing participation from over 65,000 schools. In total, more than 2.2 million students competed, with 1.11 million boys and 1.10 million girls representing their institutions in over 123,000 matches.
The initiative is part of a broader government push to integrate physical activity, culture, and extracurricular development into the standard curriculum. Officials noted that the tournament serves as a critical talent pipeline, pointing to members of the national women’s football team who were discovered through similar school-level competitions. To ensure the long-term development of these young athletes, the DPE has emphasized the need for post-tournament support to prevent talented players from dropping out of the sports system.
In recognition of their efforts, winners are set to receive substantial incentives. The championship teams will be awarded 300,000 BDT and a golden replica trophy, while runners-up will receive 200,000 BDT. Individual players are also set to earn cash prizes ranging from 7,500 to 15,000 BDT, alongside honors for top scorers and standout performers. Third-place matches have already concluded, with Khiraikandi Imam Uddin Government Primary School from Cumilla taking the bronze in the girls’ category and Ganeshpur Government Primary School from Satkhira securing it for the boys.
Mahadi Amin, the Prime Minister’s adviser on education and primary and mass education, underscored that these initiatives align with a national vision to cultivate well-rounded citizens. He stated that the government is restructuring the education system to foster not only academic excellence but also the teamwork, discipline, and moral values necessary for the next generation to thrive as skilled professionals and entrepreneurs. Moving forward, the administration plans to maintain a year-round calendar of sports and cultural competitions in collaboration with various ministries to ensure consistent engagement for students nationwide.
