RAB Arrests Two Suspects Including Prime Accused in Deadly Mugging of School Headmistress Near Parliament Building

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two suspects, including the prime suspect, in connection with the death of school headteacher Ronjila Parvin, who died after being shoved from a moving autorickshaw during a bag-snatching attempt near the South Plaza of the National Parliament House in Dhaka.
RAB-2 officials confirmed the arrests on Sunday, adding that the motorcycle used during the commission of the crime has also been seized. The prime suspect was identified by authorities as Poni, also known as Para Poni. Further details regarding the investigation and the identity of the second suspect are expected to be disclosed during a press briefing scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the RAB-2 headquarters in the capital’s Mohammadpur area, led by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nayeemul Hasan.
The victim, 56-year-old Ronjila Parvin, served as the headteacher of Bagbari Government Girls’ Primary School in the Gabtali Upazila of Bogra. She and her husband, Abdul Matin, had arrived in Dhaka from Bogra early Friday morning to seek medical treatment for her at the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital. While they were traveling in an autorickshaw toward the hospital, assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside the vehicle and attempted to snatch the victim’s bag. The force of the tug caused Parvin to fall from the autorickshaw, resulting in a fatal head injury. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, Abdul Matin filed a murder case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The couple, residents of Taraf Sartaj village in Bogra, leaves behind a daughter who is currently a ninth-grade student.
Data from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) indicates that 172 cases related to snatching incidents have been filed in the capital over the last six months, leading to the arrest of 402 individuals. Official statistics show the highest concentration of these crimes occurred in the Wari police station area, followed by the Tejgaon division. Authorities note, however, that these figures may not represent the full scale of the problem, as many victims choose to file general diaries rather than formal cases, while others do not report minor incidents to the police at all.
