Proshika Appoints Academic Jahangir Alam Chowdhury as New Board Chairperson

Proshika, one of Bangladesh’s leading non-governmental development organizations, has appointed a new board of directors to steer its strategic initiatives through 2029. The board is led by M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, a professor of finance and treasurer at the University of Dhaka, who takes the helm as chairperson. Concurrently, the organization has tapped veteran official Md. Mizanur Rahman Khan to serve as acting chief executive officer, a role he has held since June 4.
The leadership transition is viewed by stakeholders as a pivotal moment for the organization. There is a strong expectation that the new board will prioritize institutional integrity, transparency, and accountability, ultimately strengthening Proshika’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of marginalized communities across the country.

Dr. Chowdhury brings an extensive academic and research background to the organization, including his role as executive director of the Center for Microfinance and Development at the University of Dhaka. His expertise spans microfinance, poverty alleviation, and climate finance, supported by a PhD in Banking and Finance from the University of Stirling in the United Kingdom. Throughout his career, he has served as a senior fellow and visiting scholar at prestigious international institutions, including the University of Toronto and the Asian Development Bank, while contributing as a consultant for organizations such as the World Bank and UNDP.
Acting CEO Md. Mizanur Rahman Khan provides deep internal continuity, having served the organization for nearly three decades. Beginning his career with Proshika in 1997 as an area coordinator, Khan climbed the institutional ranks through various director-level positions. His long-standing history with the organization is expected to provide the operational stability necessary to revitalize its grassroots development programs.

The board of directors features a diverse group of seasoned professionals and social advocates. Md. Shahid Uz Zaman, founder and executive director of the Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO), and Md. Nurul Islam Tuhin, general manager of Samorita Hospital, will serve as vice-chairpersons. The financial oversight of the board will be managed by Rafika Akter, an advocate for women’s rights, who has been appointed as treasurer.
Rounding out the board are members Md. Abdul Khaleque Talukder, Renuka Biswas, Edvin Barun Banerjee, Md. Saleh Bin Shams, and Miftah Naim Huda. Together, this cohort of leadership is tasked with expanding Proshika’s reach and ensuring that its development interventions remain impactful, transparent, and responsive to the evolving needs of the nation’s most vulnerable populations.
