Prohibited Bangladesh Chhatra League members block Dhaka-Khulna highway to protest vandalized Mujibur Rahman mural

Members of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) staged a protest and blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway on Monday, decrying the recent defacement of a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Kashiani Upazila Parishad complex.

The demonstration began around 11:45 a.m. in the Ratail Horticulture Center area of Gopalganj. Approximately 40 to 50 protesters set fires on the road and chanted slogans while demanding accountability for the vandalism, which reportedly occurred on the night of June 9. The blockade lasted for about 30 minutes, resulting in significant traffic congestion and leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway.

Footage of the protest circulated widely on social media, including a video shared on the personal Facebook account of Suman Sardar, the vice president of the Kashiani Upazila BCL unit. The incident follows earlier reports of local activists cleaning the mural on June 10 after images of the defaced monument began to draw public scrutiny online.

Kashiani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed that authorities were aware of the reports regarding the protest. However, he noted that by the time police arrived at the scene, the demonstrators had dispersed. Law enforcement officials have stated that the incident remains under investigation.
