Prime Minister Tarique Rahman pays tribute at Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia graves to mark BNP 48th anniversary

DHAKA — Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman paid tribute to his parents, party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, on the occasion of the party’s 48th anniversary on Tuesday.
Accompanied by senior party leaders and members of the BNP Standing Committee, Tarique Rahman arrived at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar mausoleum complex at 9:17 a.m. to place wreaths at the graves of the former leaders. Following the formal tribute, the delegation participated in special prayers and recited Fatiha, seeking divine peace for the souls of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
The ceremony saw the attendance of several cabinet ministers and senior party officials, including Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Abdul Moyeen Khan, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Minister for Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain, and Minister for Water Resources Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie. Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, along with Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Selima Rahman, were also present.
Following the prayers, Tarique Rahman planted a sapling on the mausoleum grounds and released fish fry into the Zia Udyan lake. As security protocols were relaxed, a large influx of party supporters and activists gathered at the site, chanting slogans celebrating the party’s founding and the legacy of the Zia family.
The BNP has announced a five-day nationwide program to mark its 48th anniversary, featuring discussion meetings at the district and metropolitan levels. This year’s anniversary holds particular significance as the party observes the occasion while in government for the first time in nearly two decades, with Tarique Rahman serving his inaugural term as Prime Minister.
Ziaur Rahman founded the BNP on September 1, 1978. Following his death, the party leadership passed to his widow, Khaleda Zia. Tarique Rahman assumed leadership of the party following his mother’s death on December 30, 2025.
