Prime Minister Tarique Rahman orders overhaul of Dhaka traffic system and relocation of major terminals

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued a series of directives aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion, modernizing the capital’s transport infrastructure, and restoring order to the public transit sector. The mandates were delivered during a high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
A major component of the plan involves the relocation of key commercial and transport hubs. Officials have decided to shift the Karwan Bazar kitchen market to Gabtoli, while the Phulbaria bus terminal will be moved to Keraniganj. To facilitate this transition, an interim bus terminal is scheduled for construction within the Jhilmil project area in Keraniganj, with a completion deadline set for four months.
The government is also prioritizing technological integration to improve road efficiency. Prime Minister Rahman ordered the implementation of an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system alongside a dedicated mobile application for use on the city’s expressways and flyovers.
Additionally, the administration has tasked the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) with conducting an urgent study of the Jatrabari area. The university is required to submit a comprehensive report within 15 days, detailing viable solutions to resolve the persistent traffic gridlock currently plaguing that corridor.
