Police search for suspects in Mymensingh labor leader murder as accused post on social media

Police in Mymensingh have yet to make any arrests in the murder of local labor leader Manik Mia, despite the primary suspects publicly posting on social media hours after the case was filed. The victim, a 40-year-old former vice-president of the local laborers’ union and a palanquin driver, died following a brutal assault last Tuesday.
According to family members and law enforcement, the incident began when Manik Mia was intercepted near the Gauripur bus stand area while running an errand. Witnesses and local authorities allege that a group led by Shoeb Munshi, the assistant general secretary of the Mymensingh North District Jubo Dal, forcibly abducted him and transported him to a nearby residence in the West Dapunia area. There, he was subjected to repeated physical abuse before being abandoned, eventually succumbing to his injuries after being rushed to a hospital.
Following the victim’s death, his wife, Sumaiya Akter, filed a formal complaint on Thursday night, naming Shoeb Munshi as the primary suspect alongside seven other individuals and several unidentified accomplices.
Despite the active investigation, the primary suspect and the third-listed accused, Al Imran Khan, took to Facebook on Friday night to declare their innocence, characterizing the murder charges as a result of political vendettas. These posts have caused significant distress for the victim’s family, with his son, Arif Mahmud, stating that the public social media activity serves as an intimidation tactic while the perpetrators remain at large.
In response to the public outcry, the opposition student and youth organizations have taken internal action. Both Munshi and Khan, alongside Rifat Hasan—a joint secretary of the Gauripur Technical School and College Chhatra Dal—were expelled from their respective political affiliations following the allegations.
Gauripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Habibur Rahman confirmed that authorities are aware of the suspects’ social media activity. Police are currently working to trace the fugitives’ locations and expect to finalize arrests soon, though no suspects were in custody as of Saturday morning.
