Police recover decomposed body of elderly woman in Sunamganj; foul play suspected over missing cash

Police recovered the semi-decomposed body of 65-year-old Asia Begum from her home in the Inatnagar area of Jagannathpur municipality in Sunamganj late Monday night. Authorities discovered the remains after breaking down the door of the residence, which had been locked from the outside.

Asia Begum, the widow of the late Khalik Mia, lived alone in the house following the marriage of her only daughter. According to local reports and police, the victim had traveled to Sunamganj town for medical treatment last Thursday, after which relatives lost contact with her.

Suspicions were raised on Monday night when neighbors walking past the house detected a foul odor emanating from the premises. Following their report, police arrived at the scene and discovered the body wrapped in a blanket on a bed inside the residence.

The victim’s son-in-law, Dilshad Mia, alleged that the motive for the crime was robbery. He stated that Asia Begum had kept between 40,000 and 50,000 taka in the home for her medical expenses, suggesting that she may have been killed for the cash before the perpetrator locked the house and fled. Her daughter, Kalpana Begum, confirmed that she had not been able to reach her mother since Thursday afternoon.

Jagannathpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam confirmed that the residence had only one entrance. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. The body was sent to the Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue on Tuesday morning for a post-mortem examination.
