Police prepare charge sheet in Mymensingh child rape and murder case

Police in Mymensingh’s Dhobaura sub-district are preparing to file a formal charge sheet by Monday in the case involving the gang rape and murder of a five-year-old girl. Mymensingh District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamrul Hasan confirmed that investigators are moving swiftly to ensure an expedited trial, citing the gravity of the crime.
According to police, the four suspects—identified as 19-year-olds Maruf Mia, Arif Mia, and Md. Saim Mia, along with 21-year-old Rakib Mia—have already provided confessional statements to a local magistrate. Authorities are now finalizing the documentation, including the pending autopsy report expected Sunday and the DNA evidence, which is slated for arrival by Monday.

The child went missing on the afternoon of June 14 while playing near her home. After an exhaustive search by family members, her body was discovered roughly 500 yards away, buried beneath the bed of the Kangsa River. The discovery prompted immediate local outrage when family members preparing the body for burial noticed severe physical trauma, leading them to contact the authorities.
The victim’s father filed a case with the Dhobaura Police Station on June 15, accusing the four suspects of abduction, gang rape, and murder. Following their arrest, the suspects confessed to the details of the crime during their appearance before Judicial Magistrate Tonoy Saha earlier this week.

The brutality of the incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the region. Local advocacy groups and concerned citizens have been staging regular demonstrations, including a rally at Goyatala Bazar on Friday, where protesters demanded that the judicial process be concluded within 30 working days.
For the victim’s family, the legal proceedings offer a small measure of hope for justice. Expressing deep anguish, the girl’s father called for the maximum penalty for those involved, stating that he hopes the swift resolution of this case will prevent such tragedies from befalling other children in the future.
