Police detain son and daughter-in-law after missing elderly woman found dead in Natore

Police in the Natore district of Bangladesh recovered the body of a 75-year-old woman from a roadside ditch on Tuesday, 15 days after she was reported missing. The discovery, made in Agpara Sherkol village within the Singra upazila, has led authorities to detain the victim’s son and daughter-in-law for questioning.

The victim, identified as Maria Begum, also known as Sharifa, had been residing with her eldest son, Shahidul Islam, at the time of her disappearance. According to family members, she was last seen on the morning of May 25. After an extensive search yielded no results, her daughter, Morjina Begum, filed a formal police report on June 6.

Suspicion turned toward the son after family members noted his lack of cooperation during the search efforts for the missing woman. This growing unease culminated on Tuesday afternoon when the victim’s remains were found inside a sack submerged in a ditch adjacent to Shahidul Islam’s home.

Officer-in-Charge of Singra Police Station, Rafiqul Islam, confirmed that the body has been transferred to the Natore Modern Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
