Police Association Denounces Mob Attack on Barishal Police Station Amidst Misinformation

The Bangladesh Police Service Association has condemned the recent violent attack on a police station in Agailjhara, Barishal, labeling the incident a disturbing manifestation of an emerging “mob culture” within the country. In a formal statement issued Friday, the association expressed deep concern over the assault on law enforcement officers and the vandalism of state property.

The unrest began following the July 8 arrest of 26-year-old Riaz Fakir, who was taken into custody by local police in connection with a theft investigation. According to the police, the suspect, who struggled with drug addiction, sustained self-inflicted head injuries while in detention. He was initially transported to a local health complex before being transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced medical care.

Despite the medical intervention, a false report of Fakir’s death spread rapidly on July 9, triggering a violent reaction. A mob subsequently descended upon the Agailjhara police station, where they damaged the facility and attacked on-duty officers.

The Police Service Association described the incident as a direct threat to the rule of law, state institutions, and public safety. The organization warned that such actions are punishable under existing laws and suggested that vested interest groups may be inciting chaos to undermine the government’s reputation.

The association urged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and to refrain from succumbing to rumors. Calling for civic responsibility, the statement emphasized the necessity of upholding the legal process and maintaining public order to prevent further instability.
