Police arrest two ruling party leaders following unauthorized protest in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested two local Awami League leaders late Friday night in connection with an unauthorized demonstration held in the capital’s Uttara district earlier that morning.
The suspects, identified as Mehedi Hasan, president of the Tazumuddin Upazila Jubo League, and Shahidullah Kiran, organizational secretary of the Tazumuddin Upazila Awami League, were apprehended aboard a passenger launch at the Sadarghat terminal in Old Dhaka.
According to Md. Elias Kabir, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Uttara division, the arrests followed an investigation into a flash protest staged by the Awami League and its affiliated wing, the Jubo League, despite the organization’s current political restrictions. Authorities identified the pair after video footage of the protest circulated widely on social media.
Upon receiving intelligence that the suspects were attempting to flee to Bhola, DB officers conducted a raid on the Ilisha launch. Both men, who have previously served as union council chairmen in Tazumuddin, are now in custody. Police confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway to file formal charges against them.
