Police arrest two over student death at Lakshmipur residential academy

Police in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, have arrested two individuals in connection with the death of a 14-year-old student whose body was found hanging in a school dormitory last week. The arrests follow a murder case filed by the victim’s family, who allege that the teenager was subjected to fatal physical and mental abuse over a theft accusation.

The suspects, identified as the school’s acting principal, 48-year-old Shariful Islam, and a 19-year-old student, Sajidul Islam Majumdar, were apprehended during overnight raids across the sub-district on Sunday. Both individuals were remanded to jail by a local court on Monday afternoon.

The victim, 14-year-old Mehedi Hasan, was a student at the Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy. His body was discovered on June 16, prompting immediate allegations from his family that he had been tortured after being falsely accused of stealing a mobile phone. The victim’s father, Zia Uddin, filed a formal complaint last Thursday, naming eight suspects and naming approximately 10 others as unidentified defendants.

According to the lawsuit, the perpetrators allegedly assaulted Hasan, causing him to fall gravely ill. The family maintains that the suspects subsequently staged the scene to make the death appear as a suicide.

Ramganj Police Station officer-in-charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury stated that the incident is being treated with the utmost priority. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that further operations are being conducted to track down the remaining suspects named in the case.
