PDB Transfers Four Workers After Assault on Engineers at Chittagong Office

Four employees of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) in Chittagong have been transferred following allegations of misconduct and physical assault against senior engineering staff. The incident, which occurred Tuesday at the agency’s Agrabad regional office, centered on a dispute over the recruitment of a temporary worker.
According to Nilufarin Akter, a system analyst and executive engineer, a group of 20 to 30 individuals led by former worker Gazi Ayub entered her office on the fifth floor to protest the hiring of a “no work, no pay” laborer. Akter reported that the group, identified as members of the Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) union, began shouting and behaving aggressively when questioned about why the recruitment process was bypassed.

As the situation escalated, assistant engineer Mehedi Haque intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the confrontation. Eyewitnesses allege that the CBA members forcibly dragged Haque out of the office and physically assaulted him in the hallway.
In response to the incident, PDB authorities have transferred four employees: plant operator Hafizur Rahman to Pabna, lineman Nurunnabi to Bhola, electrician Shafiqul Islam to Sylhet, and driver Ayub to Dinajpur. Chief Engineer Kamal Uddin Ahmed has been notified of the events through a formal complaint filed by the victims.

Nazrul Islam, joint general secretary of the CBA, defended the group’s actions by claiming that management had unilaterally hired individuals affiliated with the Awami League without consulting the union. He characterized the subsequent transfers as retaliatory.
PDB officials confirmed that they have received conflicting accounts from both the engineering staff and union members. The reports detailing the allegations have been forwarded to the agency’s headquarters in Dhaka for further review.
