Newlywed Couple Drowns in Canal While Visiting Family in Naogaon

A young couple drowned in a canal in Badalgachhi, Naogaon, on Sunday afternoon, cutting short a visit to the bride’s family home. The victims were identified as 22-year-old Nur Islam and his 18-year-old wife, Sumaiya Akter, who had been married for six months.
The tragedy unfolded in Kartikahar village under the Adhaipur union. Nur Islam, a resident of Gangni in Meherpur, had arrived at his father-in-law’s residence on Saturday afternoon. According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. while the couple was near a canal adjacent to the village.
Witnesses stated that Nur Islam went into the canal to bathe while his wife remained on the bank. When he suddenly slipped beneath the surface, Sumaiya attempted to rescue him, but she also disappeared into the water. Local residents launched an immediate search operation, eventually recovering the pair roughly 30 minutes later.
The victims were rushed to the Badalgachhi Upazila Health Complex, where medical staff confirmed they had already succumbed to the accident. Health officer Kazi Taharima Akter noted that the couple was unresponsive upon arrival at the facility.
Local authorities have concluded their initial investigation. Badalgachhi Police Station officer-in-charge Muhammad Ruhul Amin stated that the bodies were released to their respective families after it was determined that no formal complaints had been filed regarding the incident.
