NCP Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Accuses BNP Government of Widespread Failure and Declining Popularity

Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, spokesperson for the National Citizens Party (NCP), has leveled sharp criticism against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), asserting that the current government has failed to address critical administrative and economic challenges since taking office three months ago. Speaking at an Eid reunion and recruitment event in Comilla on Saturday, Bhuiyan characterized the administration as having lost public support at an accelerated pace, drawing unfavorable comparisons to the tenure of the previous Awami League government.

Bhuiyan argued that the BNP-led government has failed to fulfill the core aspirations of the July mass uprising, claiming that the party has reached a level of unpopularity that took its predecessors 17 years to achieve. He pointed to reports of vacant attendance at ministerial events as evidence of diminishing public enthusiasm and disillusionment with the current political trajectory.

The NCP spokesperson expressed deep concern over the state of law and order, citing a rise in incidents of “mob justice,” armed robberies, and violence. He highlighted that despite the transition to a new government, reports of sexual violence remain high, noting data suggesting 84 cases of rape in the past month alone, including the murders of six children. Bhuiyan further criticized the Minister of Home Affairs, asserting that the pledge to curb mob-led violence has not been met with action, and alleged that members of the ruling party have been implicated in several such incidents.

Economic pressures were also a central theme of the address, with Bhuiyan condemning the sharp increases in electricity and gas prices, which he described as creating an unbearable burden for ordinary citizens. He contended that the government’s failure to manage basic economic stability has severely compromised the quality of life for the general populace.

During the event, Bhuiyan also addressed allegations regarding the misappropriation of 250 million taka, which had been directed at him and NCP chief coordinator Hasnat Abdullah. He dismissed these claims as misleading, clarifying that the controversy stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding development fund allocations rather than the personal acquisition of funds. The event, held at a hotel convention center in Comilla’s Kandirpar area, featured speeches from several other prominent figures within the NCP and associated youth wings.
