Mourning village prepares for burial of mother and three daughters murdered in Lakshmipur

A profound silence has descended upon Latiya, a small village in Comilla, as residents prepare to lay four members of the same family to rest. The village, usually bustling with the activity of children, is now paralyzed by grief following the brutal murders of 40-year-old Shahinur Akter and her three daughters—Saima, 21, Ikra, 17, and 10-year-old Sipa—in the town of Raipur, Lakshmipur.
According to reports, the family was attacked on Thursday at their rented residence in the Dhanhata area of Raipur municipality. The only surviving member of the immediate family is Shahinur’s 16-year-old son, Junaid Islam, known as Sifat. He narrowly escaped the massacre because he was working his shift at a local hardware store at the time of the incident.

Shahinur’s family had faced significant hardship since the death of her husband, Kamal Hossain, who died by electrocution seven years ago. A former itinerant vendor who had settled in Lakshmipur to provide better educational opportunities for his children, his death left the family to rely on Shahinur’s domestic work and the modest earnings of her teenage son. Despite their poverty, the family held high aspirations; Saima was awaiting university admission after completing her higher secondary education, and her sister Ikra was preparing for upcoming examinations.
The atmosphere at their ancestral home in Latiya remained harrowing on Friday as relatives gathered to await the return of the bodies. Villagers expressed shock at the violence inflicted upon a family described as honorable and resilient. Abdul Baten, Shahinur’s brother-in-law, noted that the grief of losing four relatives in a single act of violence is immeasurable, while neighbors have called for urgent state support for the sole survivor, Sifat.

Four graves have been prepared side-by-side at a local cemetery near the Meghna riverbank. Family members have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack to determine if the assailant acted alone or if others were involved.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, 28-year-old Antar Majumder, a transient fruit seller from Noakhali, was captured by local residents following the attack. Majumder subsequently died from injuries sustained during the confrontation. While the motive remains under investigation, the double funeral rites are expected to draw a large crowd as the village of Latiya mourns a family whose dreams were cut short in a single day of violence.
