Mentor of SAFF-winning footballers Shantimoni Chakma hospitalized after cardiac emergency

Shantimoni Chakma, the foundational coach who mentored several members of Bangladesh’s SAFF Championship-winning women’s football team, is currently under observation in the coronary care unit (CCU) of a private hospital in Chittagong following a cardiac emergency.
The medical crisis unfolded on Wednesday afternoon while Chakma was overseeing a training session at Ghagra College ground in Rangamati. According to her family, she began experiencing acute chest pain while preparing for the practice session at a nearby shop. She was initially rushed to the Rangamati General Hospital, where an electrocardiogram (ECG) indicated severe complications, prompting doctors to recommend an immediate transfer for specialized care.

Upon her arrival at a private facility in the Mehedibag area of Chittagong late Wednesday night, cardiologists identified blockages in two of her coronary arteries. Her brother, Shashi Chakma, confirmed that medical staff performed an emergency procedure to restore blood flow. She is now entering a critical 72-hour period of medical observation.
Chakma has been a pivotal figure in the development of women’s football in the Rangamati region for years, serving as the coach for the Ghagra High School women’s team. Her influence is widely recognized, as she provided early training and mentorship to star players including Ritu Porna Chakma, Monika Chakma, and Rupna Chakma.

Following the news of her hospitalization, an outpouring of support has emerged on social media, with fans and peers calling for her swift recovery. Bir Sen Chakma, a retired headmaster who previously oversaw Ritu Porna Chakma’s primary schooling, issued a public appeal for financial and moral support, noting that the coach’s family is currently facing significant economic strain as they navigate the costs of her treatment.
