Measles outbreak claims five more children in Bangladesh as infections surpass 84,000

Five children have died from symptoms associated with measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, according to the latest health department data released Saturday. The fatalities occurred between Friday morning and Saturday morning, with three deaths reported in Dhaka, while one child each died in Rajshahi and Mymensingh.

The latest figures bring the total death toll since mid-March to 648. Official reports from the Directorate General of Health Services indicate that of those who succumbed to the illness, 556 showed symptoms of the disease, while 92 were confirmed to have contracted measles.

Since March 15, health authorities have recorded 84,899 cases of children exhibiting measles symptoms across the country. During this period, 69,606 children have required hospital admission for treatment. Laboratory testing has confirmed measles in 10,248 cases, with 63 new infections identified within the last 24-hour reporting cycle.

Clinical activity remains high, with 672 new hospitalizations recorded in the most recent 24-hour period. However, recovery rates are also rising, as 577 children were discharged from facilities during the same timeframe. To date, 65,852 children have successfully recovered and returned home following treatment.
