RAB Arrests Suspect in Netrokona Schoolgirl Rape Case

Authorities in Netrokona’s Kendua upazila have arrested a man accused of raping a nine-year-old girl, following a manhunt that led to his capture in Gazipur on Thursday evening. The suspect, identified as Abdur Rahim, was taken into custody by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and subsequently handed over to local police on Friday morning to face prosecution.

The incident occurred last Saturday when the victim went to a nearby marshland to retrieve cattle. According to family members and local sources, Rahim intercepted the girl and assaulted her. The girl’s mother discovered the suspect fleeing the scene after searching for her daughter, who had failed to return home. Although the family initially sought treatment from a local village doctor, the girl’s condition deteriorated on Monday, necessitating her admission to the Kendua Upazila Health Complex before she was transferred to the Netrokona 250-bed District Hospital for specialized care.

Despite the gravity of the crime, the victim’s father alleged that two local village leaders, Abu Taher and Abu Bakkar, attempted to suppress the matter. The father reported that the pair offered 50,000 taka and pressured the family to forgo legal action, citing potential social stigma. The victim’s family rejected the settlement, and the father filed a formal case against Rahim on Tuesday.

The accused village leaders have since vacated the area, and their mobile phones remain unreachable. Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Maksuda confirmed that the victim has returned home following her recovery. Addressing the allegations against the village leaders, the OC stated that an investigation into their conduct is underway, and if evidence confirms their involvement in obstructing justice, legal action will be taken against them. Police are currently preparing to present the suspect before the court.
