Local BNP leader expelled in Akkelpur over property seizure allegations

AKKELPUR, Bangladesh – The local unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the Akkelpur Upazila of Joypurhat has permanently expelled a leader following allegations that he forcibly occupied the residence of a local Awami League official.
The expelled leader, Mizanur Rahman, served as the joint general secretary of the Raykali Union BNP. The expulsion order was issued on Sunday night after the party leadership determined that Rahman was involved in activities damaging to the organization’s reputation.
Arif Iftekhar Ahmed, general secretary of the Akkelpur Upazila BNP, confirmed the decision, stating that the party maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward members who abuse the party’s name for illegal activities. According to the expulsion notice, Rahman had been given a seven-day ultimatum on July 21 to vacate the property in question, but he failed to comply with the directive.
The property, a two-story residence located on approximately four decimals of land in Raykali village, belongs to Belal Hossain, the general secretary of the Raykali Union Awami League. According to local sources, Hossain had mortgaged the house to the Jianagar branch of Agrani Bank to secure a loan of 1.2 million BDT. Hossain and his wife went into hiding following the political transition on August 5, at which point Rahman allegedly seized control of the house.
Rahman has denied the allegations of land grabbing. He claims that the land on which the house stands is his ancestral property and that Hossain had built the structure after encroaching upon his family’s land. Rahman maintains that he has merely reclaimed his rightful property.
The matter has since drawn police intervention. Shahnaz Begum, the wife of Belal Hossain, filed a formal complaint at the Akkelpur Police Station.
Akkelpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Reza confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that Sub-Inspector Bazlur Rahman has been tasked with investigating the matter. The investigating officer visited the site and spoke with Rahman, who reiterated his claim of ancestral ownership. However, police reported that Rahman failed to attend a scheduled meeting at the police station to resolve the dispute.
