Jahangirnagar University suspends eight students over freshman ragging incident

Jahangirnagar University authorities have suspended eight students from the Department of Physics over allegations of ragging newly enrolled students. The administrative order, signed by acting registrar A.B.M. Azizur Rahman on Tuesday, confirms that the disciplinary action was taken in accordance with the university’s Student Discipline Ordinance of 2018.
The incident occurred between the night of July 20 and the early hours of July 21, when students from the 54th batch allegedly targeted members of the 55th batch near the Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq Hall. According to the investigation, the victims were subjected to verbal abuse, forced to perform physical exercises, and endured significant mental and physical harassment.

University Proctor A.K.M. Rashidul Alam told Prothom Alo that the action followed a formal complaint filed by the victims, who provided documentation and evidence supporting their claims. Under the provisions of the 2018 disciplinary ordinance, the Vice-Chancellor exercised his authority to impose the temporary suspensions.
The evidence and formal grievances have now been forwarded to the university’s anti-ragging cell. Officials stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the specific extent of each student’s involvement before a final decision on permanent disciplinary measures is reached.
