Jagannath University has awarded 9.56 million taka in research grants to 642 postgraduate, MPhil, and PhD students, marking a significant increase in financial support for academic inquiry. The funding was distributed during a ceremony on Monday led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Rais Uddin, who handed checks to the attending recipients. For those unable to attend the event, the university plans to transfer the funds directly into their personal bank accounts via the Electronic Fund Transfer Network (EFTN).

The breakdown of the disbursements reflects a broad commitment to advanced research across various stages of study. The university allocated 4.97 million taka to 498 master’s thesis students for the 2023-2024 academic year, with each recipient receiving 9,980 taka. Additionally, 49 MPhil students from the 2025-2026 cohort were awarded a total of 1.17 million taka at 24,000 taka per student. PhD researchers received the largest individual share, with 95 students across multiple cohorts receiving 36,000 taka each, totaling 3.42 million taka.

During the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Rais Uddin highlighted that the university has nearly doubled its research budget compared to previous years. He emphasized that in an era of intense global competition, maintaining the university’s academic standing requires a renewed commitment to integrity, accountability, and diligence from both students and faculty. Treasurer Professor Sabina Sharmin echoed these sentiments, urging the grant recipients to ensure their research meets high academic standards.

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the student body, with many describing the support as a vital step toward fostering a robust culture of inquiry. Shahriar Hossain, an MPhil student in the Department of Political Science, noted that such initiatives serve as a powerful incentive for young scholars and provide the necessary encouragement for future research endeavors. The event, moderated by Acting Registrar Professor Sheikh Md. Gias Uddin, was attended by senior faculty members, deans, and institutional directors.
