International Crimes Tribunal Orders Ziaul Ahsan Jailed Over 2015 Disappearance of Salahuddin Ahmed

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday ordered retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan to be remanded in custody in connection with a case involving crimes against humanity. The tribunal officially recorded his arrest for the alleged enforced disappearance of Salahuddin Ahmed, the current Minister of Home Affairs, which took place in 2015.
Following the hearing, Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim told reporters that the abduction of Salahuddin Ahmed during the previous administration is being treated as a crime against humanity under the International Crimes Tribunal Act. Investigators identified primary evidence linking Ziaul Ahsan to the incident, prompting the tribunal to formalize his arrest and order his detention while the investigation proceeds.
Salahuddin Ahmed, who served as a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at the time, was allegedly abducted from a residence in the capital’s Uttara area on the night of March 10, 2015. His wife, Hasina Ahmed, subsequently accused members of the law enforcement agencies of orchestrating the disappearance.
The politician was discovered two months later on May 11, 2015, in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. Local police reported at the time that they detained Ahmed after receiving reports from residents regarding a man wandering the streets in a disoriented state.
Following the collapse of the Awami League government amid a mass uprising on August 5, 2024, Indian authorities issued a travel pass to Ahmed. He returned to Bangladesh on August 11, 2024.
