Heavy rain in Sunamganj, fear of flash flood, emergency meeting of disaster management committee

Sunamganj is experiencing heavy rain with thunder since Monday morning. The water of rivers and streams is increasing due to rain and upstream hill slopes. Due to the fear of floods, farmers are harvesting paddy as best they can. The District Disaster Management Committee held an emergency meeting today at noon in the conference room of the District Commissioner’s office.

Under the chairmanship of Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Minhazur Rahman, the representatives of administration, Agriculture Extension Directorate, Water Development Board (PUBO) officials, Army, Police, BGB and other related departments were present in the meeting.

Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Mohammad Minhajur Rahman told Prothom Alo, “We are more worried about the issue of paddy harvesting in Haor. We give it utmost importance. I have traveled around Hawre myself. In some areas, 50 to 60 percent of the paddy has been harvested. We are campaigning extensively, so that harvesting of Haor paddy can be completed as soon as possible. The concerned have been directed for necessary cooperation in this regard. We have the necessary preparations to deal with disaster situations.

Farmers said that the boro crop of Haor is at risk due to continuous rains in Sunamganj and upwelling. Haor paddy is not fully ripe yet. Farmers are trying to harvest the paddy of the land quickly due to the fear of floods. Due to adverse weather conditions, they are facing difficulties in harvesting, threshing and drying of paddy. The combined harvester machine is not running due to the water in many hours due to the rain, and there are also no laborers to harvest the paddy by hand. Due to lack of sun, the harvested paddy cannot be threshed and dried. Floods can occur at any time, so there is danger even if the paddy is not harvested.
