Heavy rainfall paralyzed normal life in Dhaka and Chittagong on Sunday, as the first workday of the week triggered widespread traffic gridlock and severe commuting hardships. The persistent downpour, fueled by a combination of an offshore low-pressure system and active monsoon winds, left major arterial roads submerged, stalling vehicles and forcing residents to endure long waits for transportation under heavy rain.
In the capital, the morning rush was marked by reports of vehicles breaking down in waterlogged streets, further constricting traffic flow. Students heading to schools and colleges faced particular distress, with many left waiting for hours on rain-slicked roads. Meteorological data indicates the intensity of the storm, with Dhaka recording 76 millimeters of rainfall between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Sunday, followed by an additional 28 millimeters over the subsequent three hours.

Port city Chittagong has been battling continuous precipitation for nearly a week, leading to chronic waterlogging that has persisted for several days. Rainfall in the city reached 41 millimeters between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, following a deluge of 129 millimeters recorded overnight from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
According to meteorologist Hafizur Rahman, the wet conditions are expected to linger through the coming day. While there may be brief respites during the night, rain is forecast to persist across the capital throughout Sunday and into Monday. Conditions in Chittagong may show signs of improvement starting Monday as the intensity of the rainfall is expected to diminish.
