Gazipur Student Leader Expelled Following Extortion Allegations and Viral Threatening Audio

Gaziapur Metropolitan Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has expelled a ward-level president following the circulation of an audio recording in which the leader is heard engaging in extortion and making inflammatory political remarks. The expulsion of Ratul Shikdar Omi, who served as the president of the student organization’s 51st ward unit, was confirmed by the metropolitan general secretary, Mahmudul Hasan, on Tuesday.

The decision followed the emergence of a viral phone conversation in which Shikdar was recorded demanding money from a local garment worker leader. In the audio, the accused is heard dismissing the authority of high-ranking political figures, asserting that neither senior opposition leaders nor the Prime Minister could intervene in his operations within his territory. The blatant disregard for organizational and national leadership sparked widespread backlash, prompting immediate disciplinary action from party officials.

The controversy deepened on Tuesday morning when Mazharul Islam, office secretary of the central committee of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Trading Federation, filed a formal complaint at the Tongi West Police Station. The complaint, which names Shikdar and five unnamed associates, alleges a pattern of systematic extortion, kidnapping, and hostage-taking.

According to the complaint, the group had been harassing staff at the federation’s office in the Sataish area for an extended period. Islam alleged that when the office was relocated, the group followed, continuing their demands for illicit payments. He further claimed that when his demands were not met, Shikdar and his associates forcibly abducted him, holding him in an apartment until he paid a ransom of 65,000 taka.

Efforts to reach Shikdar for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off throughout the day. Meanwhile, local law enforcement has launched an investigation into the allegations. Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman stated that authorities are treating the complaint with high priority and that appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible once the investigation concludes.
