Fresh Cocktail Blast Reported in Shariatpur Amid Recurring Local Unrest

Local authorities in Shariatpur’s Zajira upazila are investigating yet another cocktail explosion that occurred Saturday afternoon in a remote banana grove in Mulai Beparikandi village. While the blast produced a loud detonation that startled local residents and scorched nearby vegetation, no injuries or property damage were reported.

Police responded to the scene after receiving distress calls via the national emergency hotline. Officers collected forensic evidence from the site, which remains under scrutiny as part of a broader, ongoing effort to curb recurring violence in the Bilashpur union.

The Bilashpur region has long been a flashpoint for organized violence, stemming from a four-decade-old territorial feud between rival factions along the Padma riverbank. Local reports suggest the area has become a hub for the clandestine manufacturing and distribution of crude explosive devices. These weapons are frequently deployed during localized skirmishes, creating a persistent security risk for area residents.

This latest explosion follows a series of violent incidents that have drawn national attention. On May 31, multiple cocktails were detonated near a cemetery in the Jankarkandi area, an incident that remains unsolved. Earlier this year, on January 8, three individuals were killed in Mulai Beparikandi when the explosives they were assembling detonated prematurely. Furthermore, the region’s volatile environment has left innocent bystanders vulnerable; in late May, a 10-year-old child lost his right hand after handling an unexploded device discovered in a nearby field.

Zajira Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed confirmed that investigators are currently working to determine the origin of the explosives and identify the individuals responsible for storing them at the site. Despite frequent police raids and the discovery of makeshift bomb-making workshops in recent months, the recurring blasts continue to pose a significant challenge to local law enforcement. According to local records, at least 15 separate locations within Zajira have been sites of cocktail-related explosions over the past six months.
