Four injured in blast at Jatiya Nagorik Party rally in Savar

A political rally organized by the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) in Savar, near Dhaka, descended into chaos late Monday night following a targeted explosion that left at least four people injured. The blast occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the Tarapur Eidgah ground as the party’s convener and Chief Whip of the Opposition in Parliament, Nahid Islam, was addressing the gathering.
The victims—identified as Md. Shahin Khandakar, Md. Josim, Md. Shahadat Hossain, and Imran Hossain—were rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital. Medical staff confirmed that the patients sustained injuries consistent with a bomb blast, with at least one individual suffering a serious leg wound requiring surgical intervention.

The rally was part of a nationwide series of “July Processions” intended to commemorate the July mass uprising, advocate for the implementation of the “July Charter,” and address issues such as border killings. According to party organizers, the event proceeded from Savar Thana Bus Stand to the Eidgah ground, where attendees were gathered to hear from party leadership.
Following the explosion, Nahid Islam addressed the crowd, accusing the local administration of complicity in the attack. He noted that the power supply to the area had been mysteriously cut just before the blast, fueling allegations of a premeditated attempt on his life and the lives of his supporters. “This was a plan to murder us,” Islam stated, warning that those providing shelter to the perpetrators would face consequences similar to those of the ousted Awami League regime.

In the wake of the violence, NCP supporters marched to the Savar Model Police Station to stage a protest. Party leaders held emergency meetings with senior police officials to demand accountability. Nahid Islam questioned the local administration’s failure to provide adequate security, emphasizing that the party would not be deterred by intimidation or acts of political terrorism.
Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamima Parveen visited the scene to assess the situation and labeled the attack “unfortunate.” She stated that police had provided security to the NCP leadership following the incident and that a three-member committee has been formed to conduct an investigation. Parveen assured the public that the power outage and the source of the blast are being scrutinized, adding that the police will proceed with formal charges once a complaint is filed by the party.
The Savar incident follows an earlier address by Nahid Islam in Gazipur, where he sharply criticized the current administration. He accused the government of betraying the public mandate by failing to honor the “July Charter” and the reform-focused sentiments expressed by a majority of the electorate during recent parliamentary elections.
