Fishermen recover massive unidentified metal structure from Bay of Bengal

Local fishermen in Bangladesh have recovered a mysterious, massive metallic structure from the Sandwip Channel in the Bay of Bengal, sparking widespread curiosity and speculation among coastal residents. The object, which resembles a large industrial oil tanker or storage unit, was discovered floating adrift on Tuesday and was towed to the Botgachtola Hilsa landing station in Santoshpur union by two fishing boats.
The cylindrical structure, measuring approximately 35 feet in length and 10 feet in diameter, appears heavily weathered, showing significant signs of rust and peeling paint from a prolonged period at sea. Local fishermen Jishu Jaldas and Kripa Jaldas, who spotted the object while casting nets, described the initial discovery as a difficult operation requiring the combined strength of two vessels to navigate the heavy, submerged mass toward the shore.

Since the structure was tethered to a canal bank, it has become a central point of discussion for the local community. While some residents theorize that the object might be a detached part of a cargo ship or a fuel tanker, others suggest it could be industrial equipment lost at sea. Nizam Uddin, a veteran ship-breaking worker from the nearby Sitakunda region, speculated after viewing the object that it may be a support pillar or crane component from a maritime vessel.
Authorities are now working to identify the origin of the structure. Nayan Shil, deputy director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), stated that the object could potentially be a segment of a dredger. He noted that his agency is currently cross-referencing records with the Chittagong Port Authority to determine if any such equipment had been reported missing or lost during recent operations.

Local law enforcement has been alerted to the situation, with Sandwip Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sujan Halder confirming that police are ready to assist in facilitating the return of the property should a rightful owner emerge. The fishermen who recovered the item have expressed their willingness to hand over the structure to its owner, maintaining that their primary motivation for securing the object was curiosity and maritime safety rather than salvage. As of Wednesday, crowds continue to gather at the landing station to inspect the remnants of the unidentified maritime hardware.
