Fight of transport workers, long traffic jam on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Saraile

Goods carrying vehicles are repeatedly getting stuck in potholes at Sarail Bishwaroad intersection of Brahmanbaria on Dhaka-Sylhet highway. In between, a long traffic jam has occurred on both sides due to the fight of transport workers in the roundabout area. The traffic jam has been created from Shantinagar in Sarail upazila to Islamabad via Sarail Bishwa Road intersection and Kuttapar intersection. Thousands of vehicle passengers have suffered.

According to the police and local sources, heavy rains last Thursday night caused waterlogging in small and large potholes in Sarail Bishwar Road intersection area. It caused a traffic jam after 8:30 in the morning. Around 12 noon, the traffic jam eased a little, but after 2 pm, when the traffic pressure increased, the traffic jam started to increase again. Then the goods vehicles were getting stuck repeatedly while crossing the pothole. Long-distance passenger vehicles are also struggling to cross these potholes.

Meanwhile, the bypass road built for CNG-driven auto-rickshaws on the eastern side of the roundabout has become vacant. The bypass road was cleared six months ago (June 3 last year) by members of the joint forces. A few months ago, the road again went into illegal occupation. Again, there are three illegal stands of CNG-powered autorickshaws on three sides of the roundabout. Three-fourths of the roundabout has become impassable.

On the other hand, around 4:30 pm, a minor collision occurred between a passenger microbus at the Upazila Sadar microbus stand and a BRTC passenger bus plying on the Dhaka-Sunamganj highway. Due to this incident, the transport workers got involved in a fight on the highway. Due to this, the traffic jam in Bishwa Road intersection area is stopped for some time and after 4:30 pm, the traffic jam becomes long. By seven in the evening, the traffic jam spread from Shantinagar of Sarail upazila to Islamabad via Sarail Bishwar Road intersection and Kuttapar intersection.

Among them, Suhilpur of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila on the Comilla-Sylhet highway had its first weekly cattle market in Bengali 1433. Due to the large number of buyers and sellers in the market, traffic pressure is created. Due to this, there is a long traffic jam on the Comilla-Sylhet highway from Bishwaroad junction.

Sarail Khantihata Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Taher Dewan told Prothom Alo, “I have been in the field with the force since morning. Today being Thursday, the traffic pressure on the highway has increased. On the other hand, there are potholes in the roundabout area. Among them, two groups of workers fought on the highway. All in all, traffic jams have been created. Hope the traffic will be normal in a while.
