Family of injured Bhairab teacher alleges pressure to shield attacker from justice

Family members and colleagues of a school teacher in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, are raising alarms over alleged efforts by influential local figures to shield the prime suspect in a brutal attempted murder case. Teacher Sithi Simita, 28, remains hospitalized following a violent attack on July 13 that left her with 16 deep lacerations, including 10 to her head.

During a press conference at the Bhairab Press Club on Sunday, family members accused local power brokers of attempting to manipulate the legal proceedings by claiming the accused, 25-year-old Priya Begum, is mentally unstable. They condemned these reports, which have been circulating on social media, as a calculated effort to evade justice for a premeditated assault.

According to family accounts, the attack occurred while Sithi was tutoring a student at the home of local hotelier Bayezid Mia. Investigators and family members believe the assault was driven by a robbery motive, as the victim was wearing gold jewelry at the time. The attacker allegedly locked the door from the inside to prevent Sithi from escaping before inflicting severe injuries, which included the partial severing of a finger and crushing of several others.

Sithi is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Although she remains in a precarious condition, family members stated that she has regained the ability to speak and has corroborated their accounts regarding the assailant’s intent. Doctors treating the educator reported that her head wounds alone required 50 stitches.

A case of attempted murder has been filed by the victim’s father-in-law, Shishu Mia, leading to the immediate arrest of Priya Begum. The suspect is currently being held in the Kishoreganj District Jail.

Police investigation officer and Sub-Inspector Emdadul Kabir confirmed that the investigation into the incident is nearing completion. He stated that the authorities are preparing to submit a formal charge sheet to the court in the near future. The victim’s family, supported by academic staff from the schools where she taught, continues to demand a transparent investigation and exemplary punishment for both the assailant and any potential accomplices who may have incited the attack.
