Family of Deceased Student Leader Protests Outside Pirgachha Police Station Demanding Justice for Death During Police Raid

Family members and local residents staged a protest in front of Pirgachha Police Station on Saturday, demanding justice for Monarul Islam Bokshi, a 29-year-old student leader who died after falling from a residential building in Savar. Monarul, who served as the vice-president of the Savar Thana Chhatra Dal, died late Thursday night during a police operation at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) staff quarters.
Monarul’s father, Jafar Ali Bokshi, a security guard at the BPATC, alleged that his son was killed due to police misconduct. According to family members, the victim was living in his father’s residential quarters at the time of the incident. Following the autopsy at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, the body was transported to the family’s ancestral village in Dakshin Hatibandha, Sundarganj, Gaibandha, where he was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon.
Police reports indicate that a joint team from Savar Model Police Station and Pirgachha Police Station conducted the raid while searching for a missing teenage girl. Officials claim that while they were questioning the victim’s father, a heavy object was heard hitting the ground outside. They subsequently discovered Monarul’s body and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have since formed a five-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
The victim’s family has rejected the official account, alleging that Monarul was intentionally pushed from the roof. Monarul’s brother, Mamdel Hossain Bokshi, claimed that the missing girl’s father, identified as Mintu, had accompanied the police to the building. He alleged that Mintu and individuals in police attire engaged in a heated argument with Monarul on the roof before pushing him. He further accused the group of feigning concern by urging the family to rush Monarul to the hospital immediately after the fall.
The protest at the Pirgachha police station involved over 150 villagers who demanded an impartial investigation into the role of the officers present during the raid. Local political leaders eventually intervened to de-escalate the tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
Pirgachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Malik confirmed that family members had arrived at the station with the ambulance to demand answers regarding the details of the Savar operation, including the identity of the officers involved. However, he stated that the group left shortly after the discussion.
As of Saturday evening, no formal case has been filed in connection with the death. Savar Model Police Station OC Saiful Alam confirmed that no complaints have been lodged with his office. Monarul’s brother stated that the family has been occupied with funeral rites and intends to file a formal case at the Savar Model Police Station in the near future.
