Shehrin Amin Bhuiyan (Monami), an assistant professor in Dhaka University’s Public Administration department, has resigned from her post as Assistant Proctor, citing unprecedented challenges faced by the proctorial team amid recent national shifts. Ms. Bhuiyan disclosed her decision in a post on her verified Facebook page Monday morning.

In her statement, Ms. Bhuiyan, who has a seven-year teaching career, shared that she had never previously sought administrative responsibilities. She accepted the Assistant Proctor role on August 28, 2024, at the invitation of then-Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, viewing it as a significant honor for a young faculty member.

She reflected on her tenure, stating, “For the past two years, I have learned from Professor Saifuddin how a proctor must maintain superhuman patience, how to tackle heated situations with an unwavering smile, and, above all, how to uphold one’s self-respect.”

Ms. Bhuiyan expressed uncertainty about the future, writing that she does not know if the “July and post-July period” will ever return to the country. She added, “Probably no other Proctor and their team at Dhaka University have faced such a situation, and probably never will.”

Her resignation follows that of Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, who stepped down as Dhaka University’s Proctor on Sunday, May 10, citing personal reasons. Associate Professor Md. Israfil Prang (Israfil Ratan) of the Faculty of Fine Arts’ Graphic Design department has since been appointed as the acting Proctor.

Professor Ahmed had assumed the proctorial responsibilities on August 28, 2024, following the student-led popular uprising on August 5, 2024, which ultimately led to the fall of the Awami League government.
