Drug traffickers used drones and CCTV for surveillance, says RAB

Law enforcement agencies discovered that drug traffickers in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, employed CCTV cameras and drones to maintain surveillance and protect their stronghold from raids. The revelation came after a joint operation by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police following an attack on RAB members on Tuesday.

The operation, which lasted from Tuesday afternoon into the night in the Deobhog area of the city, resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of drugs and weapons, including drones and CCTV equipment. Thirteen individuals were apprehended during the raid.

At a press conference held Wednesday at the RAB-11 Battalion headquarters in Adamji, Narayanganj, Commander Lieutenant Colonel HM Sajjad Hossain detailed the sophisticated methods used by the drug network. He stated that the traffickers had installed CCTV cameras around their base and utilized drones for constant monitoring, enabling them to receive advance warnings of law enforcement movements and evade capture.

During the operation, authorities confiscated four CCTV cameras, one drone, five pistol bullets, ten knives, seven machetes, two large knives, three cleavers, and cash totaling 1.16 million Bangladeshi Taka. Additionally, 235 kilograms of cannabis and 11,000 Yaba pills were recovered. A cash counting machine, laptops, and weighing scales were also seized.

Lieutenant Colonel Hossain identified Russell and Rashed as the alleged ringleaders of the drug syndicate, which is believed to involve over fifty individuals. Efforts are underway to apprehend them and other members of the group. He emphasized that RAB’s anti-drug operations will be intensified, and no criminals will be spared.

The operation was prompted by an attack on a RAB intelligence team that had gone to the Deobhog Lichubagan area in plain clothes on Tuesday afternoon. Three RAB members sustained injuries in that assault. Subsequently, the joint operation was launched in the Deobhog area.
