Dispute over online gambling in Comilla, teenager dies after being attacked by friends

A teenager who was attacked by his friends over a dispute over online gambling in Comilla’s Barura died while undergoing treatment. He died on Tuesday afternoon after being under treatment for four days in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Dhaka.

According to local and police sources, Rakib was called by his friend Farhan from his house last Friday around 8:30 pm. Three more associates of Farhan were already staying on the street next to the house. There an argument started between them about online gambling. At one stage, Farhan and his accomplices stabbed Rakib with sharp weapons and escaped. Local people rescued him and first took him to Barura Upazila Health Complex. When the condition worsened there, he was quickly sent to Dhaka for treatment.

Barura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Nazmul Haque said that the police visited the spot after receiving the information. It was initially confirmed that all the accused were Rakib’s friends and were involved in online gambling. As their family came to know about it, they suspected Rakib. The murder was done out of that anger.

OC also said that Rakib’s body has been kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. A case will be filed if the relatives return to the area with the body after the autopsy on Wednesday. Police operations are continuing to arrest the accused.
