Dhaka North City Corporation Launches Three-Day Cleanup Drive for Gulshan Lake

A comprehensive cleaning campaign for Gulshan Lake, organized under the banner “Cholo Khal Bachai” (Let’s Save the Canal), commenced on Friday morning as part of a concerted effort to restore the city’s vital waterways. The initiative, which launched at 9:00 a.m., is scheduled to span three days of intensive activity, with organizers pledging to maintain year-round maintenance measures to preserve the lake’s cleanliness.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), the Gulshan Society, Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC Bangladesh, and the non-profit organization Footsteps Bangladesh. Throughout the inaugural day, workers from the Gulshan Society were seen removing floating debris from the water near the Gulshan-2 Lake bridge, while additional teams focused on cleaning the surrounding roads and embankments.

Over five hundred volunteers, alongside employees from the participating institutions, joined the effort, working from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to clear the area. Ahmed Zafrul Hasan, Chief Digital Officer of Commercial Bank of Ceylon, noted that the initiative aligns with the bank’s corporate social responsibility commitment to addressing environmental concerns and climate change. He emphasized that the focus on sanitation should extend beyond elite neighborhoods to include all canals and water bodies throughout the city.

Footsteps Bangladesh, an organization that has previously spearheaded cleanup efforts at three other canal sites, indicated that this project represents their fourth such endeavor. Ridwan Ahmed, the organization’s Impact and Outreach Lead, stated that they are committed to continuing the operation until the lake is completely cleared of waste and foul odors.

Volunteers from across the city gathered to support the mission, reflecting a growing movement toward community-led urban renewal. Participants expressed hope that such localized interventions would raise public awareness and contribute to the broader goal of transforming Dhaka into a cleaner, more sustainable metropolis. Organizers added that they are already drafting future plans to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Gulshan Lake cleanup efforts.
