A Dhaka tribunal sentenced a husband and wife to death on Thursday for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in the capital’s Pallabi area, concluding a swift judicial process just 19 days after the crime occurred.
The victim’s father, who attended the hearing, expressed profound satisfaction with the verdict, noting that the justice delivered within the timeframe promised by the Prime Minister has provided the family with a sense of closure. He conveyed his gratitude to the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, the media, and the public for their sustained support during the ordeal. Visibly distressed during the proceedings, the father maintained a somber demeanor throughout the delivery of the sentence, which he hopes will be executed without delay.

The tragic incident came to light on May 19 when authorities recovered the victim’s dismembered body from an apartment in Pallabi. While the primary suspect, Sohel Rana, had attempted to flee by breaking through a bathroom grille, his wife, Swapna Akter, was detained at the scene. Law enforcement officials later apprehended Rana in Fatullah, Narayanganj, on the evening of the same day.
Following the filing of a formal case by the victim’s father, the investigation moved rapidly. On May 20, both suspects provided confessional statements before a metropolitan magistrate. The tribunal formally framed charges against the couple on June 1, initiating a trial process that concluded with the sentencing following the presentation of testimony and closing arguments.
