Court orders former MP Shahjahan Omar remanded in custody for Ishak Jamaddar murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered former Jhalokati-1 Member of Parliament Muhammad Shahjahan Omar to be formally arrested and remanded to jail in connection with the murder of Mohammad Ishaq Jamaddar. The incident occurred during the student-led anti-discrimination protests in the capital’s Adabor area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the directive following a hearing held in the presence of the defendant. Police had produced Omar in court under tight security for the proceedings.
During the hearing, Sub-Inspector Mahesh Chandra Singh, the investigating officer from Adabor Police Station, informed the court that formally arresting the defendant was essential for a fair and impartial investigation into the killing. The court granted the request after hearing arguments from both sides.
The legal proceedings follow a petition filed by the police on August 24. While the court initially scheduled the hearing for August 30, it ultimately proceeded on Sunday with the defendant present.
The murder case stems from an incident on August 5, 2024, when Ishaq Jamaddar, a resident of Bebajiakhali village in Bamna Upazila of Barguna, sustained fatal gunshot wounds near the Shyamoli Club field. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
The formal murder case was initiated on July 2, 2025, by Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraf Hossain of the Adabor Police Station.
Omar, a recipient of the Bir Uttam gallantry award, was initially arrested on November 21, 2024, in Rajapur, Jhalokati. Since then, he has been detained in jail while being formally implicated in multiple cases filed at various police stations across the capital.
