Court orders arrest of former Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan in Jatrabari murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered former Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan to be shown arrested in connection with a murder case filed over the July mass uprising at Jatrabari Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque issued the directive following a hearing on a petition submitted by the police. State prosecutor Harun Or Rashid confirmed the court’s decision.
According to case documents, the victim, Parvez Hawlader, was an active participant in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. On August 5, 2024, Hawlader joined protesters on the Jatrabari highway. During the demonstration, unidentified individuals reportedly hurled crude bombs and opened indiscriminate gunfire at the crowd. Hawlader sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
The victim’s mother, Selina Begum, filed the murder case on November 15, 2024. Following the investigation, police moved the court on August 19, 2025, to formally include Sujan in the case as an arrested suspect. The court subsequently scheduled the hearing for August 30 in the presence of the accused.
The Awami League government, in which Sujan served as a minister, was ousted on August 5, 2024, following widespread protests. Law enforcement officials had previously taken Sujan into custody on September 16, 2024.
