Court denies bail for former Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque in murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday denied a bail petition for former Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Khobaib during the anti-discrimination student movement. Acting Judge Md. Sadekin Habib of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-7 issued the order following a hearing.

The case stems from the events of August 5, 2024, when Khobaib was fatally shot during protests in the Jatrabari area. According to case documents, the victim’s brother, Jobayer Ahmed, filed a complaint on November 16, 2024, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina among 80 accused individuals for their alleged involvement in the killing.

Justice Khairul Haque has been held in custody since his arrest at his residence on July 24 of last year. While he has secured bail in five separate cases, he remains incarcerated due to ongoing legal proceedings, including a murder case filed at Adabor Police Station.

The legal handling of the former Chief Justice’s detention has been a subject of judicial scrutiny. Following his arrest in connection with the Jatrabari and Adabor cases on March 30, his son, lawyer Ashik Ul Haque, filed a writ petition on May 13 challenging the legitimacy of the arrest procedures. Subsequently, on May 17, the High Court directed authorities to refrain from harassing the former Chief Justice or arresting him in any matters outside of specific, documented cases.
