Court Delays Indictment Hearing for Sheikh Hasina and 33 Others in July Uprising Murder Case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday rescheduled the hearing on the framing of charges against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others in connection with the murder of truck driver Md. Hossain during the July mass uprising. Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 set September 24 as the new date for the hearing.

State prosecutor Omar Faruque Faruqi confirmed that the delay was necessitated by the absence of former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, who is currently in custody. Palak could not be produced before the court as he had been summoned to the International Crimes Tribunal earlier in the day. There are currently 10 defendants in custody regarding this case.

The hearing was previously scheduled for August 13 but was postponed to September 1 after three defendants, who had been granted bail, could not be produced in court due to their detention in separate criminal cases. According to court records, out of the 34 accused, 10 are currently imprisoned, four who are on bail appeared in court today, and the remaining 20 have remained fugitives since the start of the proceedings.

The case stems from the death of Md. Hossain, who was fatally shot on July 19, 2024, in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur. According to the case statement, the victim was returning home after parking his truck in Gabtoli when he was struck by gunfire and died on the spot.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Rina Begum, filed a murder case at the Mohammadpur Police Station on August 31, 2024. The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Akramuzzaman, submitted the formal charge sheet against Sheikh Hasina and 33 others to the court on November 23, 2025.

The high-profile list of accused individuals includes former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former member of parliament Sadek Khan, and student wing leaders Saddam Hossain and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
