BSF Withdraws Elderly Man From Bangladesh Border After Failed Push-in Attempt

An elderly man who spent Sunday trapped in a tense standoff at the Hatkhola border in Joypurhat’s Panchbibi upazila has been removed from the area by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The man, whose presence sparked a prolonged confrontation along the zero line near pillar 279, was taken away at approximately 9:05 p.m. on Sunday, according to local residents and members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident began Sunday morning when BSF soldiers attempted to push the man across the border into Bangladesh. Local villagers intercepted the individual and alerted the BGB, who subsequently assisted in returning him to Indian territory. Throughout the day, BSF personnel made repeated attempts to force the man back across the border, but each effort was thwarted by the vigilant presence of BGB troops and local residents who blocked the crossing.

Tensions escalated after sunset when BSF personnel reportedly extinguished border lighting and attempted to maneuver the man into Bangladesh under the cover of darkness with the assistance of several Indian civilians. That effort also failed against the firm stance maintained by the villagers and the border guards. Following the unsuccessful maneuver, the man was placed into a vehicle and removed from the site by BSF forces.
Border conditions have since returned to a state of relative calm, though BGB officials confirmed that they maintain heightened surveillance to prevent further unauthorized attempts at entry.

Local residents expressed lingering concerns regarding the security climate near the Mathurapur BSF camp, noting that they have relatives in the neighboring Indian village of Jamalpur. Villagers alleged that a large number of men and women have been gathered at a school building within Jamalpur, fueling apprehension among those living on the Bangladeshi side of the border. BGB authorities stated that they are continuing to monitor the situation closely to ensure border integrity remains intact.
