BSF Abandons Attempt to Push 17 People Across Bangladesh Border Following Standoff

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel abandoned an attempt to forcibly push 17 individuals, including women and children, across the border into Bangladesh on Friday night. The standoff at the Sapahar border in Naogaon concluded after a tense 19-hour confrontation when the Indian forces retreated into their own territory under the cover of darkness.
The incident began at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Friday near the 238/MP border pillar in the Hapaniya frontier area. According to Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ariful Islam, commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Naogaon Battalion-16, the BSF attempted to coerce the group across the international boundary throughout the day. In response, BGB troops maintained a vigilant and strategic presence at the zero line to prevent the illegal entry.

Local residents witnessed the distress of the group, who were reportedly seen pleading against being forced back across the border. Mahbub Alam, a local resident from Kalmudanga village, noted that the BGB maintained a constant guard over the individuals until late into the night. Witnesses described the group as visibly distraught, crying as they were eventually led away by the BSF.
By 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, the BSF extinguished the perimeter lighting along the border and retracted the group into India after failing to breach the BGB’s defensive line. Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam confirmed that the border remains under high alert, with BGB patrols significantly reinforced to monitor the area and ensure the integrity of the frontier.
