Block of Fanai river dam has collapsed in Kulaura of Moulvibazar due to heavy rain and landslides from upstream. The Nayagaon-Alipur new paved road built over it along with the dam is at risk.

According to Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and sources of local residents, under the important rural infrastructure development project-3, the work of paving the Nayagaon-Alipur 1 thousand 100 meters long unpaved road from the southern end of the bridge built over Fanai river in Kulaura upazila of Baralekha-Moulvibazar regional highway started. Local contractor Abdul Latif got the job for Tk 1 crore 44 lakh. In that work, CC block was installed at the 55 meter area of dam breach in Alipur area. After that, the paved road work was completed about four months ago. After a few days of heavy rain at the end of March, the upstream of the Fanai river came down the hill with great velocity. At this time, the block of a part of the dam collapsed due to the flood.

Today Sunday, it can be seen that although there is water in the river, the current is not that strong. After the collapse of the block, the soil of that place is collapsing into the river. There are big bends in the river. Some of the collapsed blocks were picked up and piled on the opposite side of the road.

Local residents Abul Kashem Osmani, Abdul Wahid, Mrinal Kanti Debnath and four to five others said that due to the erosion of the river, the block was installed in the dam. It is raining every day. As a result, the place is at risk. In case of heavy rains, there is a risk of major erosion on the river banks due to landslides. If something like this happens, the embankment and the road will be broken and the houses along the river will be seriously damaged. In this situation, they demanded to repair the place on an urgent basis.

Contractor Abdul Latif said on the phone, according to the design, the CC block was installed on the slope of the river dam by constructing a wall of about three feet height. But the depth of the river at that place will be about 10 feet. Because of this, the water entered in the strong current and removed the bottom soil and the block collapsed. Some blocks have been raised to reduce the pressure on the dam. Engineers from LGED visited the site. They will send a letter to the higher authority to build a high defense wall there to prevent erosion.

The contractor also said that there is a large silt on the opposite side of the river. In order not to damage the dam on the side due to the hill slope, an initiative has been taken to cut some part of the fodder with an excavator for the time being.

Kulaura Upazila Engineer Pritam Shikder said that the security deposit of the contractor of Nayagaon-Alipur road is still deposited. The contractor will repair the collapsed area of the river embankment. Necessary instructions have been given to him in this regard.
