Bangladeshi Youth Group Marks Newborn Arrivals With Tree Planting Initiative

A group of dedicated volunteers in Ishwarganj has launched an innovative environmental initiative that links the birth of a child to the planting of new life. Operating under the banner of the voluntary organization “Janatar Ishwarganj,” these young activists commemorate the arrival of newborns by gifting their families one fruit-bearing tree and one timber tree, which are then planted directly on the family’s property.
Since launching this program in 2023, the group has successfully planted 2,022 saplings to mark the births of 1,011 children. The initiative, guided by the slogan “One child, two trees; plant trees to drive away sorrow,” seeks to foster a lifelong connection between the child and the environment. As the children grow, so too do the trees, providing both future financial security for the family and vital ecological benefits for the community.

The organization, which began as a Facebook-based platform in 2021, comprises more than 100 young members. While the tree-planting project is their most recent hallmark effort, the group remains deeply involved in broader humanitarian work, including providing financial aid to the impoverished, improving access to potable water, distributing educational materials, and organizing blood drives.
Founder Ehsanul Haque explained that the movement was born out of a growing concern over the global climate crisis and the rapid loss of biodiversity due to unchecked urbanization. By encouraging families to treat these saplings with the same care as their children, the group hopes to create a lasting culture of stewardship. The organization now plans to expand its mission to include memorial plantings, dedicating two trees to the memory of individuals who have passed away, with a formal announcement scheduled to coincide with their fifth anniversary on June 1.

The initiative has received widespread acclaim from local residents and observers alike. Jyoti Ranjan Sarkar, a parent who recently received the gift of trees for his newborn, noted the emotional significance of the gesture, describing it as the start of a meaningful relationship between his child and the environment. Local community leaders, including Saiful Islam Talukdar of the civic group Shujan, have praised the volunteers for their foresight, expressing hope that such proactive environmentalism will inspire youth across the country to adopt similar measures in their own regions.
